LSPediA and the VRS Pilot Program: Putting Solutions to the Test

The team at LSPediA has been gearing up for VRS readiness for over a year now—and doing so while also putting VRS into production. This state of readiness is what enabled us to participate in the HDA and FDA VRS pilots. It also enables our clients to leverage the new technology as they develop technical and functional SOPs. Our overriding goal for this pilot program is simple: enable confidence within industry, among our clients, and within ourselves. Usually the readiness “X factor” is a genuine concern about interoperability—both functionally and technically. We believe our efforts have helped remove or reduce those unknowns.

We have been working to ensure readiness for everything DSCSA, and VRS has brought a significant challenge to all involved: leverage unique product identification to identify suspect and illegitimate products and rid them from the Rx supply chain. While, of course, meeting all FDA requirements. The challenge, besides having viable barcodes and associated data, was to perform verification transactions in an interoperable manner across supply chain sectors. In essence this was a relay race of sorts. And in a relay race, you are only as good as your weakest link.

A Standard Rule: Interoperability

Because of this reality, we have taken great effort in enabling not only our OneScan VRS solution, but also assisting in the enablement of other competitive VRS solutions that are essential for industry success. It is adherence to standards that enables success, but it’s also essential to perform stress tests in a production-like setting to uncover gaps. We have been able to do that from within our LSPediA OneScan industry and client initiatives. But the lack of competitive VRS solutions to test interoperability with the same level of vigor is at the core of the industry sense of non-readiness.

When the selling point is, “this solution operates best when interoperating with our own solutions,” it doesn’t inspire a lot of faith in its interoperability. (One would hope your solution can at least play well with your other solutions, otherwise you’d considered totally inept.) More notably, industry success will be realized by an ability to move in stride with a partner, and unless you can do so, you’re not really interoperating at all. Worse, you’re not contributing toward collaborative success.

Interoperability Is a Cornerstone of LSPediA’s VRS Solution

We have proven our interoperability as viable front-end VRS partners by providing our look-up directory to enable VAI, Axway, Blue Link, and others to participate successfully in the VRS network. On the back end of the verification process, we provided our OneScan Investigator module to clients who need to manage negative verifications – false negatives and true negatives. Investigator is EPCIS and VRS agnostic therefore enabling collaboration and automation of negative verification management for all supply chain partners, regardless of their solution set.

The Investigator enables them to work smarter, reduce waste, and generate profitability (ROI) in leveraging a valuable solution against uniquely identifiable products and a DSCSA compliance initiative. This is why supply chain entities partner with solution providers–to solve problems in a manner that also delivers value. Those are the goals we strive for in everything we develop and promote at LSPediA.
